DVD Launch and La Scala Premiere of 1984
Apr 23, 2008Last night in Milan, Italy, a gala dinner was held to preview the premiere of Maestro Maazel's opera at the Teatro alla Scala and to celebrate the international DVD release of the opera on Decca, in a two-disc set recorded during the work's world-premiere performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
The DVD features an exclusive 30-minute introduction to the opera by Maestro Maazel. It captures the brilliant production of Robert Lepage, transferring stunningly to the screen by Brian Large. A superb cast is headed by Simon Keenlyside (in an Olivier award-winning role), Nancy Gustafson, Richard Margison, Diana Damrau and Lawrence Brownlee. (See www.1984theopera.com for most details).
The dinner event in Milan included a welcome from host Diana Bracco, CEO of the Bracco Group and President of the business enterprise association Assolombarda, a conversation between Vittorio Sgarbi and Maestro Maazel and a screening of brief exceprts from the DVD. A distinguished group of leaders from the worlds of politics, business, culture and journalism enjoyed the company of Maestro Maazel, several members of the cast and the production designers.
