Lorin Maazel to Deliver Bienen Convocation Address

Conductor Lorin Maazel will deliver the  Bienen School of Music’s convocation address on Saturday, June 16, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Tickets are not required.

For over five decades, Lorin Maazel has been one of the world’s most esteemed and sought-after conductors. In 73 years on the podium, he has conducted nearly 200 orchestras in no fewer than 7,000 opera and concert performances. During his distinguished career, Maestro Maazel has made over 300 recordings, including symphonic cycles/complete orchestral works of Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Richard Strauss, winning ten Grands Prix du Disques. Currently the music director of the Munich Philharmonic, he has occupied the same role with the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, the New York Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Maazel has also been general manager, artistic director and principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera; and artistic director and chief conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.  Aside from his career as a conductor, Mr. Maazel is also a respected composer who has generated a wide-ranging catalog primarily over the past fifteen years. In 2009, he established the acclaimed Castleton (Virginia) Festival, which brings together aspiring performers with senior mentors in an intensive, collaborative artistic environment.
