Maestro Maazel Given the National Arts Club's Medal of Honor for Music
Sep 27, 2006At a black-tie dinner in the Gramercy Park (New York City) home of the National Arts Club, Lorin Maazel was presented with the Club's top award, the Medal of Honor for Music, for his singular contribution to the field of music. It was the Club's 51st annual award, with Maestro Maazel joining an eminent and diverse group of honorees, among them Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, Placido Domingo, the Juilliard String Quartet, Benny Goodman and Gian Carlo Menotti.
Speaking in tribute to Lorin Maazel were cellist Lynn Harrell and (on behalf of her husband Sir James Galway) Lady Jeanne Galway. A musical tribute was offered by three young musicians, two of whom had recently worked with Maestro Maazel as participants in the young artists residency program he initiated through the Châteavuille Foundation. Violinst JoAnna Farrer, cellist Andrew Janss and pianist Richard Masters performed the opening movement of Brahms' great Piano Trio in B major, Op. 8. The vetern broadcaster/musicologist Martin Bookspan hosted the evening, and Club president Aldon James Jr. presented the Medal of Honor to Maestro Maazel. A newly commissioned portrait of the Maestro was unveiled and will inmmediately find a home in the gallerys that fill the National Arts Club.
