Maestro Maazel Named Kentucky Colonel

Mar 5, 2009

In recognition of his career achievements and service to the global community, and on the occasion of a concert with he is giving with the New York Philharmonic in Danville, KY, Lorin Maazel has been named to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

New Kentucky Colonels must be nominated by an existing Colonel, and certified by the state governor. Although originally the title (dating back to 1813) conferred certain militia and ceremonial responsibilities, for the more than a century it has been a been a purely honorary award. Among the many celebrated Kentucky Colonels have been Winston Churchill, Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton, Muhammed Ali, Fred Astaire, Stephen Foster, Senator John Glenn, Bob Hope, Clark Gable, Mae West and Pope John Paul II. The Kentucky Colonels today are a service organization whose efforts support charitable and educational causes thoughout Kentucky and beyond.

Maestro Maazel's honor is being conferred upon him in a ceremony at the Norton Centre for the Arts, Centre College, by the Centre's Managing Director, Dr. George Forman, prior to this evening's New York Philharmonic concert there.
