The Maestro's Season Off to a Running Start

Sep 5, 2008

Prior to the formal start of the New York Philharmonic season on September 17, Maestro Maazel is making two back-to-back European tours at a characteristically torrid pace. Over the period August 19 to September 12, he will have:

  • conducted 21 concerts and 8 full rehearsals over 25 days
  • performed in 11 different cities
  • made 12 inter-city trips by air or car
  • led 2 orchestras in 17 different works over on 10 different programs

These figures exclude the multiple encores demanded (and offered) at nearly every stop.

This period was launched with a Beethoven cycle in Taormina, Sicily, with the Associanzione Symphonica Toscanini, which then traveled to Spain for additional Beethoven concerts. Maestro Maazel then met the New York Philharmonic in London to kick off a summer festival tour with two sold-out and warmly received BBC Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. From there, the tour continues to Frankfurt, Hamburg, Lucerne (three concerts at the Festival), Essen, Paris, Stuttgart, Baden-Baden and Bonn. The programs include a world premire by Steven Stucky, the Gershwin Piano Concerto with Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and orchestral masterpieces by Bruckner, Ravel, Stravinsky and Bartok.
