The Week Ahead: Nov. 24-Dec 2
Nov 24, 2006Maestro Maazel is returning to Avery Fisher Hall for the first time since early October, for two New York Philharmonic subscription programs over seven concerts (including one at Long Island University's Tilles Center on December 1st).
The first program (November 24, 25 & 28) draws from the repertoire of the orchestra's just-completed Asian tour with Maestro Maazel, which took them to Japan and Korea, and featured five outstanding young soloists (from Asia, Europe and the Americas). Pianist Joyce Yang will perform the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Maestro Maazel leads Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony.
The three concerts that follow (November 30-December 2) have an unusual breadth of repertoire, and (in an another modest departure from the customary concert format) features two interntionally acclaimed soloists: pianist Leon Fleisher and soprano Nancy Gustafson (in her Philharmonic debut). Mr. Fleisher plays one of Mozart's early concerto gems (No. 12, K. 414) and Hindemith's Klaviermusik mit Orchester (for the Left Hand), and Miss Gustafson sings the magnificent final scene from Richard Strauss's Salome. The orchestra and Maestro Maazel will shine on their own in the evocative, highly colorful Suite No. 2 from Abert Roussel's ballet Bacchus et Ariane--one of the masterpieces of the 20th-century French repertoire.
